Phthalates: How bad are they?

First of all what are Phthalates and are they harmful?  BPA, a phthalate, is found in plastic bottles and has been linked to breast cancer.  The concern was so great that the plastic used for baby’s feeding bottles has been reformulated to remove phthalates from them in an attempt to make them safer.  Many other phthalates  are found in everyday household cleaning products, food packaging, fragrance, cosmetics, and personal-care products.

How much of a problem are Phthalates?

Furthermore, everything we use in our homes and on our skin has an impact on our health. We breathe it in or it is absorbed into our bodies.  Do we know what we are inhaling or absorbing into our bodies?  How much of an impact will it have on us or our children?  Research has been done and is ongoing to establish just how much of a problem phthalates probably are to us.  Such research is especially relevant when so many are interested in their health.

What is the Solution?

How do we avoid these chemicals and thus improve our health prospects?  The best thing we can do is review what we use to clean our homes.  Eco-friendly cleaning products go a long way to ensuring our future health and well-being.  Such products are no longer the preserve of health food shops.  Consequently they adorn many a supermarket shelf and their use helps us reduce the harmful chemicals to which we are exposed.  That smell of bleach is not such a wonderful thing in your home.  Phthalate containing cleaning products are no longer the ‘best thing since sliced bread’.
